FIELD CAMPAIGN

16 – 25 July 2021

Lucerne, Switzerland and online

IGLUNA 2021 Students with ESA Astronaut Thomas Reiter, Mount Pilatus, 24 July 2021

Thank you!

The Field Campaign of the third edition of IGLUNA took place in a hybrid way. Eight student teams travelled to Switzerland and met in Lucerne, while the four remaining stayed in their respective countries. From 16 to 25 July, they had the task of testing and demonstrating the technologies they developed during the 2020-2021 academic year around the theme “A space habitat with remote operations”.

Based on each country’s situation with regards to the COVID crisis, each team decided if they were able to come to Lucerne to complete their project or if they would rather join online from home. The teams who travelled to Switzerland set up their project on the Mount Pilatus above Lucerne and remotely operated them from the control room in the VERKEHRSHAUS – Swiss Museum of Transport.

LOCATIONS

test bed and remote operations

IGLUNA 2021 not only challenges students to develop innovative space technology in one year, but also requires them to be able to control their systems remotely.

During the Field Campaign, the projects will be installed at several locations at the Peak of the Mount Pilatus at an altitude of 2132 metres. The Mount Pilatus is located high above Lucerne and will simulate several obstacles occuring during a space exploration mission: difficult access, rough terrain, uncertain weather conditions, slower data transmission and unability to access the system after its set-up.

The teams will set up their experiments from the 12-15 July and will conduct the tests remotely from the control installed at the VERKEHRSHAUS – Swiss Museum of Transport from the 16 July.

P03 LUIEE and P09 Lunar Zebro will be located at the Krienseregg station, while P01 GrowBotHub, P04 SAMPLE 2, P05 AIX2SPACE and P11 Rebels will be on the Pilatus-Kulm Terrace.

control room and exhibition

During the Field Campaign, the student teams will mainly be located at the VERKEHRSHAUS – Swiss Museum of Transport. On the one hand, this is where the control room will be located. This infrastructure will be installed for the occasion in the Aviation Hall by the company Rhein-Tec. In order to reproduce the real communications with objects on the Moon, a delay of up to 2.5 seconds is artificially introduced in the data transmission and the bandwidth is reduced. This system was developed and implemented by the IT Services of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in partnership with IGLUNA.

In addition, the teams will benefit from a dedicated area in the Aviation Hall to connect with the public through interactive activities, audiovisual material and models. The teams that won’t travel to Switzerland will be also able to showcase their projects at the exhibition by sending videos and prototypes.

online events

In order to reach the global community and to give visibility to the teams that can’t travel to Lucerne, we’ve decided to broadcast live events throughout the Field Campaign.

Each team will be given the opportunity to present the results of their project at the “Project shows” broadcasted live our YouTube channel. These presentations will take place daily from 17 to 23 July. In addition, several other events will punctuate the IGLUNA campaign, some of which will be streamed online.
