Mars, MOXIE and the Future of Human Exploration
23 September 2019 – EPFL, Lausanne
25 September 2019 – ETH, Zurich
Former NASA Astronaut and Professor Jeffrey Hoffman will discuss some of the challenges involved in exploring Mars, including the need for using local resources to support human exploration (In Situ Resource Utilization, or ISRU). He will describe the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE) that will travel to the surface of Mars on NASA’s Mars2020 rover and will, for the first time ever, demonstrate ISRU on another planet by electrolyzing carbon dioxide from the Mars atmosphere to produce oxygen.
