Board of Directors
Welcome to Daniel Neuenschwander
Daniel Neuenschwander has been appointed member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Space Center. He will sit together with Marc Gruber, Vice President for Innovation at EPFL and Detlef Günther, Vice President for Research and Corporate Relations at ETH Zürich.
A licensed airline pilot and holder of a degree in physical geography from the University of Freiburg in Switzerland, Daniel Neuenschwander focused his professional activities up to 2001 on aviation.

In 2002, he joined the Swiss federal administration as a scientific collaborator in the space sector. From mid-2006 to mid-2009, he held the position of permanent delegate to the European Space Agency (ESA), based at the Swiss Embassy in France. He also attended a higher education business programme at the HEC in Paris, during this time.

From mid-2009 to mid-2016, he held the position of Director of the Swiss Space Office and Head of the Swiss delegation to ESA.

In March 2016 Daniel Neuenschwander has been elected unanimously by the 22 ESA Member States as Director for Launchers. He holds this position as well as the membership in ESA’s Executive Board since mid-2016.

The Directorate has been renamed in April 2017 Space Transportation, covering the portfolio of access to space, transport in and from space.
IGLUNA
Moon Mission reviewd at the Concurrent Design Facility - ESA
Nine IGLUNA students presented the initial phase of their lunar mission "SCALE" to a team of ESA specialists involved in the preparation and assessment of the agency's future space missions. The mission brings together three experiments developed during the 2020 edition of IGLUNA.

Their goal? To send their experiments by 2028 to the Moon for a 14-day mission.
Over the past three months, IGLUNA students have been assisted by experts from the Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) at ESA to plan the phase 0 of their lunar mission. The mission, named "SCALE", brings together the projects SAMPLE (Warsaw University of Technology), AMPEX (RWTH Aachen University) and Celestial, (Technical University of Berlin).

The aim of the mission is to operate for 1 lunar day (i.e. 14 terrestrial days) in order to test a module for the automated cultivation of plants, a device to produce fibres from lunar soil and a lunar communication system. SCALE will operate aboard a Lunar Lander and the experiments are planned to be brought back to Earth when the mission is complete.

CYSEC wins Swiss Space Office contract to develop secure, reliable in-orbit satellite reconfiguration
CYSEC SA, a cybersecurity company based at the EPFL Innovation Park, with its academic partner HEPIA, the Geneva University of Applied Sciences and Arts, have been awarded a contract by the Swiss Space Office to develop a solution to mitigate the cyber risks related to in-orbit reconfiguration of small satellites.

To combat the cyber risks related to satellite data transmission, CYSEC and HEPIA formed a consortium to submit a project as part of the Swiss Space Office’s 2020 Mesures de Positionnement - an annual program that “fosters and promotes Swiss technological and scientific competences that have a clear potential for space products and services/applications.”

CYSEC and HEPIA’s winning project proposes to develop a new security architecture implemented on a fault-resistant FGPA board that will facilitate secure, reliable in-orbit reconfiguration of small satellites.
